THE SHARKS
From this client, a private boarding school for girls, I had a request to create mascots that would not only showcase the strength and competitive character of its sports teams, but also will reflect the fiery spirits of its students. That meant no to pastel colours and cuddly animals at all, girls wanted to play it tough! After hours spent at the drawing board and communicating with the school’s office, the digitized mascots were ready to spring and pounce. The mascot for the school’s swimming team “Sharks” was created from scratch, and after multiple sketches, I felt it needed a splash of water and a toothy look. This resulted in my “On Top of the Wave” concept. Ready to go, with a speed and stamina, the shark is bouncing on the rip curl!

THE BOBCATS
The hockey team’s bobcat head needed redrawing to smooth out the imperfections and, most importantly, to balance the irregular shape of the sketch with the surrounding circle that was in the old mascot design. It is not an easy task to marry a simple geometric shape to an organic one, especially when a resemblance to the actual animal is desired. The shape and size of the bobcat’s features were transformed ever so slightly to make it look good within the rigid circle, and maintain a decent balance of white space. Colours were chosen to match the school’s visuals: dark red, grey and black. This school is not for sissies!
